ICAR's partnership with CGIAR began with agreements with IRRI and CIMMYT in 1974 and now covers 12 centres. Cooperation is carried out through joint work plans covering crop and livestock improvement, germplasm exchange, natural resource management, policy research and capacity building. Work plans are currently in force with ten CGIAR centres, including the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (2026–2030) and World Agroforestry (2026–2030). India also hosts the headquarters of ICRISAT at Patancheru, Hyderabad.
