The 80th Independence Day of India was celebrated across ICAR institutes, regional centres and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) across the country with immense pride, patriotic fervour and a deep sense of honour. The celebrations, in the spirit of “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat@2047”, reflected the nation’s collective resolve to build a developed, self-reliant and prosperous India. The occasion also marked 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, adding special significance to this year’s celebrations.
For ICAR and its network of agricultural research and education institutions, Independence Day holds deep significance. India’s journey towards self-reliance has been closely linked with agricultural progress, food security and scientific advancement. Over the decades, ICAR has contributed significantly to this journey through research, innovation, technology development, education and farmer-centric extension.
ICAR-Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram
ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Garacharma, Sri Vijaya Puram, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour at its headquarters, Regional Centre, Minicoy, and KVKs across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Staff, students and their families participated enthusiastically in the celebrations.
Dr Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR-CIARI, hoisted the National Flag and highlighted ICAR’s contribution to India’s agricultural transformation, food security and self-reliance. He underscored ICAR-CIARI’s efforts towards climate-resilient and sustainable island agriculture, including the recommendation of 18 crop and spice varieties, development of the flood- and salinity-tolerant rice line Dweep Dhan-11, filing of three patents, ten design registrations, three trademarks and two copyrights, and commercialization of two technologies.

The Institute also highlighted its work in fisheries and aquaculture, agrometeorological services, Khet Bachao Abhiyan, vermicomposting, resource conservation and renewable energy. Dr. Sunder called upon the scientific and technical community to continue working towards improving the livelihoods of island farming and fishing communities.
ICAR–Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna
ICAR–Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour at its campus, Sabajpura Farm, FSRCHPR Ranchi, and KVKs at Buxar and Ramgarh. The celebrations commenced with Vande Mataram, followed by flag hoisting by Dr Anup Das, Director, ICAR-RCER, and the National Anthem.
Paying tribute to freedom fighters and martyrs, Dr Das highlighted ICAR-RCER’s contributions to eastern India through improved varieties and production technologies, integrated farming systems, rice-fallow management, livestock and fisheries, land and water management, and socio-economic and extension technologies. He emphasized the need for innovation, integrity, teamwork and sustainable approaches to address challenges such as climate change, resource sustainability, nutritional security and farmers’ incomes.

Dr Das called upon the institute fraternity to work with renewed commitment and excellence towards Viksit Bharat and a self-reliant agricultural sector. Competitions and activities for school children were also organized to foster patriotism, creativity and awareness about the significance of Independence Day. The celebrations concluded with a renewed pledge to contribute to the advancement of Indian agriculture and nation-building.
ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai
ICAR–Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai, and its centres across the country celebrated the 80th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiastic participation of scientists, staff, students and their families. At the headquarters, Dr N. P. Sahu, Director, ICAR-CIFE, hoisted the National Flag and highlighted the crucial role of fisheries and aquaculture in achieving the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 through nutritional security, employment generation, rural livelihoods, exports and the Blue Economy.
Emphasizing innovation, entrepreneurship and technology-driven growth, Dr Sahu underscored the importance of aquapreneurship, start-ups and stronger linkages among research, education, industry and farming communities. He reaffirmed ICAR-CIFE’s commitment to academic excellence, student entrepreneurship and sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

The Independence Day celebrations were also held with great enthusiasm at the Institute’s centres in Rohtak, Kolkata, Powarkheda, Kakinada, Motipur and Balabhadrapuram, where National Flag hoisting ceremonies, patriotic programmes and addresses by officers highlighted the significance of freedom, national unity, scientific innovation, sustainable fisheries and nation-building. The celebrations concluded with cultural programmes and a collective pledge to contribute towards a self-reliant and developed India.
