With increasing climate variability posing new challenges to agricultural production, the ICAR–Indian Institute of Millets Research, Global Centre of Excellence on Millets, Hyderabad, has initiated a four-day training programme on “Improved Millet Production Technologies for Sustainable and Climate-Resilient Agriculture” from 11 to 14 August 2026.
The programme is being conducted under the Odisha Millet Mission Phase-II Project, with participation from stakeholders representing different blocks of Odisha. The programme was inaugurated today at ICAR–IIMR, Hyderabad, bringing together field-level stakeholders with the objective of strengthening their technical capacity in improved millet production and enabling them to effectively support farmers in adopting climate-resilient agricultural practices.

During the inauguration, an overview of the training structure and the major areas to be covered over the four-day programme was provided. It was emphasized that the programme was designed to go beyond classroom-based learning by connecting scientific technologies with practical field situations and extension needs.
The background and objectives of the training were also elaborated, with emphasis on strengthening production systems through improved varieties, quality seed, scientific crop management, and climate-resilient practices. The importance of equipping field-level stakeholders with practical knowledge was highlighted to facilitate the effective transfer of research-based technologies to farmers and contribute to improved productivity and farm-level resilience. Valuable insights on millet production were also shared, highlighting the importance of improved production practices and sustainable approaches for enhancing millet cultivation.
The training programme covers improved millet production and climate-resilient cultivation practices, along with practical exposure to ICRISAT, FPO activities, millet-based value addition, processing technologies, field demonstrations and integrated pest and disease management. Participants will also have opportunities for interaction with scientists and technical experts and practical exposure to millet production and related technologies at ICAR–IIMR.

A major strength of the programme is its focus on “learning by doing” and field-oriented knowledge transfer. By combining scientific sessions, technical interactions and practical exposure, the training aims to enable participants to understand not only what technology to promote, but also how and where it can be effectively implemented under farmers’ field conditions.
The programme is expected to create a pool of technically equipped stakeholders who can serve as knowledge multipliers in Odisha, taking improved millet production technologies from the institute to farming communities. The participants will be better positioned to guide farmers in addressing challenges such as moisture stress, erratic rainfall, declining soil fertility, pest and disease problems and inefficient resource use, thereby contributing to more productive and resilient millet-based farming systems.
