Dr Surabhi Rai, Joint Secretary (Marine Fisheries), visited the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar, today to witness the institute’s research, technology development and extension activities in freshwater aquaculture. The visit underscored the institute’s contribution to improving fish production, enhancing farmer incomes and promoting sustainable aquaculture practices.
Dr P.K. Sahoo, Director, ICAR-CIFA, welcomed Dr Surabhi Rai and briefed her on the institute’s major research achievements, technologies and outreach initiatives in freshwater aquaculture.

During the visit, Dr Rai interacted with the institute’s scientists. The discussions focused on the dissemination of improved aquaculture technologies and strategies to strengthen their adoption among fish farmers in India and neighbouring countries.
She emphasised skill development, the establishment of a profitable value chain for pearl farming and pearl marketing, and the need to work towards sustainable production of good-quality fish seed. She also suggested linking Matsya Setu video modules with iGOT Karmayogi.

Dr Rai also toured several research and demonstration units, including facilities dedicated to improved fish strains, seed production, ornamental fish and innovative aquaculture technologies.
The visit concluded with an interactive session in which participants discussed future priorities in research, capacity building, and technology transfer. The institute reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth of the fisheries sector through scientific innovation and effective outreach programmes.
