Spices have always held a special place in Indian kitchens, but beyond their culinary value, they offer immense potential for value addition, food processing and rural entrepreneurship. With growing consumer awareness about purity, food safety and quality, hygienically processed and scientifically managed spice enterprises are creating new opportunities for farmers, women, self-help groups and rural youth. The journey of RootZest, a women-led spice brand from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, is a compelling example of how skill development, institutional support and determination can transform adversity into a sustainable enterprise.
For Ms Priyanka Saini, the journey towards entrepreneurship began at a time of considerable economic uncertainty. A postgraduate in Arts with no family background in business, she faced financial difficulties following the loss of a family job and setbacks in an earlier business venture during the post-COVID period. With limited capital, little formal business experience and the responsibilities of managing a household, starting a new enterprise seemed challenging. Yet, rather than allowing these circumstances to define her future, Priyanka looked for an opportunity that could combine livelihood generation with her interest in food processing and value addition.

A significant turning point came through her association with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Saharanpur. Training and continued handholding provided her with practical knowledge of food processing, hygiene, packaging and basic business management, while also introducing her to the importance of statutory compliance, quality standards and branding. This institutional support gave her the confidence and technical foundation to turn an idea into a structured enterprise.
With this guidance, Priyanka formally established RootZest, a brand focused on the processing, packaging and marketing of food-grade spices. She obtained FSSAI and GST registrations, giving the enterprise a formal identity and strengthening consumer confidence. What began as a modest initiative gradually developed into a professionally managed food-processing enterprise, built around a simple but powerful proposition purity, hygiene, quality and trust.
At RootZest, the process begins with the careful sourcing of raw spices from reliable suppliers, followed by cleaning, grading, grinding and blending, before hygienic packaging and appropriate labelling. For Priyanka, quality is not limited to the final product; it is embedded throughout the production process. The brand's emphasis on hygienic processing and unadulterated products has become central to its identity and its relationship with consumers.

Building a brand, however, required more than producing a quality product. Priyanka gradually developed her market through direct sales, word-of-mouth promotion, exhibitions, trade fairs and customer feedback. Participation in platforms such as the Khadi Gramodyog Mela, Krishi Mela, ITC Mela, and exhibitions at Maa Shakumbhari University, Saharanpur, provided valuable opportunities to showcase her products, understand consumer preferences and strengthen market connections. Her efforts also received recognition, including appreciation by the District Magistrate, Saharanpur, Shri Manish Bansal, during an exhibition at Jan-Manch on 14 August 2025. She was also honoured by the Vice Chancellor of Maa Shakumbhari University, Saharanpur, reflecting the growing recognition of her entrepreneurial journey.
As the enterprise expanded, RootZest also began reaching beyond its local customer base. Its listing on the Amazon Marketplace has opened an additional avenue for wider market access, giving the brand an opportunity to connect with consumers beyond Saharanpur. This transition from local sales and exhibitions to an online marketplace marks an important step in the evolution of the enterprise.
The impact of RootZest extends beyond the growth of a single business. According to the case study, the enterprise has generated an annual gross income of around ₹14 lakh, with net income reported at approximately ₹3.6 lakh. The enterprise has also involved 20 women, creating opportunities for their participation in food processing and income-generating activities. Thus, what began as one woman's response to economic uncertainty has gradually evolved into a platform contributing to women's participation in rural entrepreneurship.

Priyanka's journey has also come full circle from learner to entrepreneur and, eventually, to trainer. With the experience she gained through food processing and value addition, she has served as a Master Trainer at KVK Saharanpur, sharing her practical knowledge with other women who aspire to establish income-generating enterprises. Her role demonstrates how successful entrepreneurship can create a multiplier effect, where knowledge acquired through institutional training is passed on to others and translated into new livelihood opportunities.
Her experience has brought changes not only in income but also in confidence, decision-making and social recognition. Through RootZest, Priyanka has demonstrated that a rural woman can build a viable enterprise even without a family business background or substantial financial resources, provided she has access to the right knowledge, training, institutional guidance and market opportunities.
Today, RootZest stands at an important stage of growth, with ambitions to scale production, strengthen its brand and expand its market reach. Its experience highlights the importance of formalisation, hygienic processing, appropriate packaging, quality consistency and market-oriented branding in transforming a small food-processing activity into a structured enterprise.

Priyanka Saini's journey is, therefore, more than the story of a spice brand. It is a story of resilience in the face of financial adversity, learning through institutional support, courage to start afresh and commitment to quality. Her association with KVK Saharanpur provided the technical foundation, while her determination turned that knowledge into an enterprise that now creates livelihood opportunities for other women as well.
From economic uncertainty to entrepreneurship, from trainee to Master Trainer, and from local markets to online platforms, Priyanka's journey through RootZest illustrates the transformative potential of women-led agri-processing enterprises. It shows how value addition can create livelihoods, how institutional handholding can turn ideas into enterprises, and how one woman's determination can inspire many others to take the first step towards entrepreneurship.
As Priyanka's story demonstrates, the journey from crisis to entrepreneurship often begins with the courage to start, the willingness to learn and the determination to never compromise on quality.
