ICAR–National Meat Research Institute, Hyderabad, organized a three-day hands-on training programme on ‘Practical Application of Measurement Uncertainty and Decision Rules in Food Microbiology and Residue Monitoring Laboratories’ sponsored by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) during 20–22 May 2026. The programme was designed to strengthen and harmonize the national food testing framework by enhancing the technical competencies of food analysts in the accurate estimation, interpretation, and application of measurement uncertainty and decision rules in analytical testing.
The Guest Honour, Dr S. Vaithiyanathan, Former Director, ICAR-NMRI and NABL Lead Assessor, stated that India is steadily progressing towards achieving higher standards of food safety and emphasized the need for establishing and strengthening accredited food testing laboratories to ensure the availability of safe food for consumers. He appreciated ICAR-NMRI for establishing NABL-accredited laboratories and for proactively building the capacities of professionals engaged in food safety and quality analysis.

In his presidential address, Dr S. B. Barbuddhe, Director, ICAR-NMRI, highlighted the critical importance of food safety and nutritional security in the country. He emphasized that ICAR-NMRI is actively contributing towards strengthening the national food regulatory ecosystem in association with FSSAI, particularly in the domain of meat safety and quality assurance. He also underscored the significance of scientific validation, analytical reliability, and internationally accepted laboratory practices in ensuring consumer protection and facilitating trade.
The training programme provided intensive practical exposure on the principles and estimation of measurement uncertainty, application of decision rules in conformity assessment, interpretation of analytical results, and compliance with national and international regulatory standards.
A total of fourteen Food Analysts from various State and National Food Testing Laboratories across the country participated in the programme.
