Training Programme on Transforming Poultry Research through Biotechnology Organized under DAPSC component at ICAR-DPR, Hyderabad

A five-day Short-Term Training Programme on “Transforming Poultry Research through Biotechnology: Modern Molecular Techniques and Laboratory Applications” was organized at ICAR–Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad, from 21 to 25 September 2026. The programme was conducted under the Development Action Plan for Scheduled Castes (DAPSC/SCSP) component of the ICAR-AINP-GETILHP and ICAR-DPR to enhance the practical laboratory skills of Scheduled Caste candidates.

In his inaugural address, Dr R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR, highlighted the vital role of modern molecular biology tools, advanced biotechnology techniques, and the use of chickens as bioreactors.

The training covered key theory topics, including Good Laboratory Practices, cell culture techniques, nucleic acid isolation, primer designing, PCR, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, SDS-PAGE, next-generation sequencing, genome editing, transgenic animal production, and GWAS with basic biostatistics. Participants received extensive hands-on laboratory training in chicken fibroblast and primordial germ cell (cPGC) cultures, electroporation, lipofection, DNA and RNA extraction, qPCR analysis, Western blotting, bacterial culture, cloning, and cryopreservation of cPGCs.

The programme concluded with a valedictory session. The Director commended the trainees for their active participation and distributed the certificates. Dr. K. S. Rajaravindra and Dr. L. Leslie Leo Prince, Principal Scientists, coordinated the programme as Course Directors.

In total, 15 participants joined the program.
