Kisan Mela-cum-Brainstorming Session on Dairy Sector Development Organised

A Kisan Mela-cum-Brainstorming Session on the Roadmap for Development of the Dairy Sector in Nagaland was organized by ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun, Medziphema, in collaboration with ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Phek; ICAR–National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, Hyderabad; Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland; ICAR–Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut; and ICAR–National Research Centre on Equine, Hisar.

The event was graced by Shri Kudecho Khamo, Adviser, CAWD & Taxes, Government of Nagaland, as the Chief Guest.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Girish S. Patil, Director, ICAR–NRC on Mithun, who emphasized the importance of clearly defining the production focus of the livestock sector in Nagaland. He highlighted the need to make informed choices between commercial and traditional production systems, as well as between meat-oriented and milk-oriented livestock development, taking into account local resource availability, market demand, and farmers’ capacity.

Other dignitaries present included Dr. Imomanen Tzudir, Director, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, Government of Nagaland; Dr. Prithpal Kaur, Superintendent of Police, Phek; and Shri Rhosietsho Nguori, Deputy Commissioner, Phek.

An exhibition stall set up by ICAR–NRC on Mithun showcased Mithun production technologies, value-added Mithun meat products, and extension initiatives, drawing considerable interest from farmers, officials, and other stakeholders.

The brainstorming session, comprising technical presentations and a round-table discussion, focused on scientific dairy farming practices, value chain development, strengthening of cooperatives, and policy support mechanisms. The deliberations contributed significantly to the formulation of a practical and region-specific roadmap for dairy sector development in Nagaland, with special emphasis on aligning production systems with the state’s socio-economic conditions and emerging market opportunities.
