Innovations & Technologies

1.  Super-Intensive, Precision and Natural Shrimp Farming System (SIPNSF)

Technology / Innovation: Smart, low-impact shrimp farming with biofloc, natural feed, intelligent aeration and biosecurity.

Problem Addressed: Conventional shrimp farming faces low productivity, high energy and water use, disease risks and environmental impacts, limiting the sustainability and competitiveness of Indian shrimp aquaculture.

Key Benefit / Impact: Yields 34.7–49.7 tonnes/ha per 90–122-day cycle, with 86.5–97.8% survival and FCR of 0.97–1.2. Promotes climate resilience through minimal water exchange, low energy use, natural feed production and beneficial microbes.

Institute & Year: ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai in 2024

2.  Giant Trevally: Breeding and Seed Production

Technology / Innovation: GnRH-induced breeding of Giant Trevally with 85–94% fertilization and hatching rates.

Problem Addressed: Limited availability of hatchery-produced seed of high-value marine fish constrains aquaculture diversification and commercial farming of Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis).

Key Benefit / Impact: Achieved 85–94% fertilization and hatching rates, with larval metamorphosis completed in 28–35 days post-hatch. Seed was distributed to farmers in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka following multi-location demonstrations.

Institute & Year: ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi in 2024.

3.  CIFA-ArguVax-I: Peptide-Based Vaccine against Argulus Infestation

Technology / Innovation: Immersion-delivered peptide vaccine against Argulus parasites in rohu.

Problem Addressed: Argulus infestation causes significant economic losses in freshwater aquaculture, with annual losses exceeding ₹300 crore in India, threatening fish health, survival and farmers’ profitability.

Key Benefit / Impact: Protects the fish against Argulus siamensis for over six months through immersion vaccination. Offers a potential to reduce parasitic infestation and associated economic losses exceeding ₹300 crores annually in freshwater aquaculture.

Institute & Year: ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar; 2024.

4.  Fish Freshness Indicator Device: Smart Seafood Supply-Chain Monitoring

Technology / Innovation: 3D-printed, biodegradable device for non-contact freshness monitoring in fish boxes.

Problem Addressed: Fish freshness is difficult to monitor during storage and transport, increasing the risk of quality deterioration and consumer uncertainty. Conventional indicators may contact fish, ice or meltwater directly.

Key Benefit / Impact: Enables visual freshness monitoring through colour changes from outside closed insulated boxes. Prevents direct contact between the indicator and fish, shellfish, ice and meltwater. Its biodegradable, 3D-printed design improves convenience and supply-chain confidence.

Institute & Year: ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT), Kochi; 2024.

5.  Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)-Based Hatchery and Nursery Technology for Rainbow Trout

Technology / Innovation: RAS-based rainbow trout hatchery and nursery technology for faster seed production and water savings.

Problem Addressed: Conventional rainbow trout seed production requires substantial water and longer rearing periods, limiting hatchery throughput and resource efficiency during the short breeding season.

Key Benefit / Impact: Reduces the time from eye-ova stage to fingerling to 60 days and reduces water requirements by 80–90-fold. Enables three seed-production batches per hatchery setup during the November–March breeding season.

Institute & Year: ICAR-Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research (CICFR), Bhimtal; 2024
