ICAR-CIBA, Chennai Organises Hands-on Training on Aquafeed Preparation and Quality Control for Small and Marginal Shrimp Farmers

28–30 September 2026, Chennai

ICAR–Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai, organised a three-day Capacity Enhancement-cum-Entrepreneurship Development Training on “Aquafeed Preparation Techniques and Quality Control” for small and marginal shrimp farmers associated with MPEDA–National Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (NaCSA) societies from 28–30 September 2026.

Conducted in a learning-by-doing mode, the training aimed to equip participants with practical skills in indigenous aquafeed formulation, feed processing through extrusion and pelletisation, quality control and feed management for sustainable and profitable brackishwater aquaculture. The programme primarily focused on Scheduled Tribe (ST) aquafarmers associated with NaCSA, encouraging them to explore aquafeed preparation as a potential entrepreneurial and livelihood opportunity.

Participants received hands-on exposure to feed formulation and manufacturing using ICAR-CIBA’s advanced feed processing and analytical facilities. The training covered aquaculture nutrition, selection of feed ingredients, feed formulation and processing, pelletisation, quality evaluation and feed management, with specific focus on the nutritional requirements and biology of shrimp, crab and finfish.

The programme highlighted the critical role of quality feed in improving aquaculture productivity, profitability and sustainability, while showcasing ICAR-CIBA’s efforts towards developing scientifically formulated, cost-effective and sustainable aquafeed technologies. Practical sessions helped bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and field-level application, enabling participants to develop skills relevant to establishing aquafeed-related enterprises.

At the conclusion of the training, participants appreciated its practical and hands-on approach, with several expressing interest in establishing or partnering with ICAR-CIBA for aquafeed manufacturing and related entrepreneurial activities. The programme thus provided a platform for translating institutional technologies into practical skills and creating new avenues for livelihood enhancement and sustainable aquaculture enterprises among small and marginal farmers.

A total of 40 participants attended the programme, including 30 small and marginal ST farmers associated with NaCSA, four officers from Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, and six research scholars.
