30th September 2024, Pune
As part of the Swachhta Hi Seva Campaign 2024, ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research, Pune, in association with Sahyogi Sahakari Shetkari Phul Nursery Gat, Sortapwadi, Pune, organized a hands-on training on farm safety for ornamental nurserymen at Sorpatwadi (Gunjal Mala), Pune, today. The region is known as the 'Ornamental Nursery Hub' of Pune, having more than 4,000 nurseries. Ornamental plants receive higher amounts of pesticides than field crops due to their market sensitivity, driven by their visual appeal. Therefore, the need for awareness programs on pesticide handling and safety precautions for nursery workers was deemed urgent.
Dr K.V. Prasad, Director, ICAR-DFR, Pune; Dr Kaushik Banerjee, Director, ICAR-National Research Centre for Grapes, Pune; Dr Vijay Mahajan, Director, ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research, Pune; Dr S K Roy, Director, Agriculture Technology Applications Research Institute, Pune and Shri Shantanu Jagtap, Director, Agriculture, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries, and Agriculture, Pune, graced the occasion.
The dignitaries launched ‘DFR Flori Vermi’, a new product based on vermicomposting of flowering plant waste. Practical training sessions on farm safety for the farmers were conducted during the programme.
The training session was attended by over 200 farmers who were provided with Plant Protection Safety Kits comprising gum boots, an apron, a mask, goggles, a T-shirt, and a cap to ensure safety while spraying harmful chemicals.
