Agriculture Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh visited CRRI

9th November, 2012

A four member delegation from Bangladesh headed by the Hon'ble Minister of Agriculture, Her Excellency Begum Matia Chowdhury visited Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack on 9th November, 2012 and discussed areas of mutual interest. Considering the climate change scenario and similarities between Bangladesh and Eastern India in rice production ecologies, the Minister laid emphasis on high yielding stress tolerant rice varieties with shorter duration. Since the farmers of the region are poor, she emphasized on resource conservation technologies, which would help the farmers to cut down the cost of various inputs. She appreciated the initiatives of the Institute for standardizing agricultural practices that would require less of water, fertilizer, nitrogen and pesticides. She praised the scientists for developing genotypes with very high grain number, varieties having tolerance to salinity and models for rice-fish integrated farming.

Dr. T. Mohapatra, Director and Heads of Division explained the Institute's mandate and the salient findings. Exchange of rice scientists between the two countries was considered desirable to gain from each other's experience that would facilitate meeting the challenges to rice production in both India and Bangladesh.
