Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare visited ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil Science, Bhopal today. Shri Singh, in his address emphasized on the importance of “Technology Demonstrations” to the farmers as farmers believe and practice what they see. He said that the institute should develop some part of its land as ‘Model Farm’ for showcasing the institute technologies towards increasing the farmers’ income. He also urged the scientists to develop a hand-held device of rapid soil testing which could be accessible to farmers and other stake holders.
Dr Ashok K. Patra, Director, ICAR-IISS briefed about the achievements and on-going activities of the institute. Among other things, a mini lab of soil testing “Mridaparikshak” has been developed by the institute during the last four years which is a farmers’ friendly technology for generating soil health cards at the farmer’s doorstep. The mini lab has been widely adopted by state departments of agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and several other private organizations and NGOs. Besides, the institute has generated soil fertility maps of the country, a rapid technique of waste decomposition, and new fertilizer materials including nano-fertilizers.
