Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visits ICAR-IISR, Lucknow5th October 2018, Lucknow

Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visited ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow today.

While interacting with scientists, Shri Shekhawat said there is a need for paradigm shift in the policies related to sugar sector for better utilization of sugarcane production for the welfare of Indian society in fulfilling the future sugar and energy demands.  Shri Shekhwat added that the varieties and cutting edge innovative technologies and sugarcane machine developed by the Institute have addressed the issues of cost reduction, productivity improvement and concerns of sugarcane farmers in view of labour paucity. He urged to develop climate resilient contingent plan, so that sugarcane farmers could reap higher returns from alternative high value crops under drought conditions. Shri Shekhawat said country’s  production centric approach has been shifted to market oriented and profit centric approach.  He urged the scientists to popularise intercropping of mustard in autumn planted sugarcane to increase the production of oilseeds in the country and develop sugarcane varieties suitable for higher ethanol production.

 At the outset, Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, ICAR-IISR, Lucknow briefed on the current sugarcane cultivation scenario in India and suggested contingent plan for sustaining sugarcane and sugar productivity. He also highlighted the initiative taken by the Institute for doubling of farmers’ income in PPP mode with DSCL group and promotion of improved jaggery technology and its marketing arrangements for improving the net profitability of the sugarcane farmers.
