Ranching of Ganga wild Stock Carps in River Ganga at Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh

ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow undertook a large-scale captive propagation assisted ranching of carps in river Ganga using wild brood stock at Mehandi Ghat, Kannauj in collaboration with Department of Fisheries, Uttar Pradesh today.
The Chief Guest, Shri Subrat Pathak, Member of Parliament, in his address, highlighted the importance of River Ganga and its native fishes for enhancing the natural population, conservation of biodiversity and livelihood security of fishers.
Adhering to the major objective of conservation of natural genetic diversity, the fish fingerlings were produced from the brood stock raised and maintained in ICAR-NBFGR Live Fish Germplasm Resource Centre with the collection of wild types from the River Ganga.
Under PMMSY, ICAR-NBFGR has supplied two lakhs advance fingerlings of IMCs (Rohu, Catla and Mrigal) to Department of Fisheries, Uttar Pradesh for ranching the seed at Mehandi Ghat, River Ganga, Kannauj.
Earlier, Dr. U.K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow handed over the fish seeds to the officials of the Department of Fisheries, Uttar Pradesh.
