IISR celebrates 68th Foundation Day

ICAR-Indian Institute Sugarcane Research (IISR), Lucknow celebrated its 68th Foundation Day today. Sugarcon - 2019 and Ikshu Fest was also inaugurated on the occasion.

In his inaugural address, Dr. A.K. Singh, DDG (HS & CS), ICAR applauded the IISR team for the outstanding contributions that have culminated the country to achieve the first position in sugarcane and sugar production in the world. He also urged the Scientists to working for its sustainability without any adverse effect on the environment. Dr. Singh urged the Scientists to develop improved varieties of sugarcane with higher factor productivity.

Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, ICAR-IISR underlined the institute’s achievements made during the last year. He also informed about the development of five varieties of sugarcane during the last 18 months.

Dr. Sushil Solomon, VC, CSAUA&T, Kanpur coined the event as Ikshu Kumbh. He mentioned that the event is an extravaganza as a large number of Scientists, Industry representatives and farmers have participated to celebrate the IISR Foundation Day and discuss the green technologies that can be adopted for sugarcane cultivation for increasing the sugar production without harming the environment.

Dr. R.K. Singh, ADG (CC), ICAR; Dr. Bakshi Ram, Director, ICAR-SBI, Coimbatore; Dr. S.C. Deshmukh, DG, VSI, Pune; Dr. Narendra Mohan, Director, NSI, Kanpur and Dr. J. Singh, Director, UPCSR, Shahjahanpur also marked their presence during the inaugural session.

Around 16 employees of the Institute were conferred with Awards for contributing in various categories.

The Seed cane of two improved varieties viz., CoLk 09204 and CoLk 11206 was distributed to hundred participating sugarcane farmers of Uttar Pradesh.

A live demonstration on sugarcane machines was also conducted for the benefit of visiting farmers.

The event registered a total footfall by more than 200 Scientists, including 23 delegates from China, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Brazil, Vietnam and Belgium.
