ICAR-SBI, Regional Centre, Karnal organizes Innovative Farmers’ Workshop

The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Research Centre, Karnal, Haryana organized the “Innovative Sugarcane Farmers Workshop - 2020” today.

Padam Bhushan, Dr. R.S. Paroda marked his presence as the Chief Guest of the occasion.

In his welcome address, Dr. Bakshi Ram, Director, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu outlined about the Institute’s establishment in the Year - 1932. Dr. Ram also highlighted about the various popular sugarcane varieties namely Co 285, Co 312, Co 341, Co 356, Co 419, Co 975, Co 1148, Co 1158 and Co 6425, etc., that were released for the Subtropical States. He also underlined about the releasing of Co 7717 variety by the Centre during the Year - 1977-78 that became popular in the short span of time and the farmers got benefited according to their expectations.

Dr. S.K. Pandey, Head, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Research Centre, Karnal was also present during the occasion.

Shri Umesh Kumar, Farmer from Uttar Pradesh took the inter-cropping of sugarcane with papaya that gives 300 q Papayas per acre and 400 q Sugarcane per acre. As a result, he got Rs. 3 to 5 lakh per acre as the net profit.

The main objective of the workshop sponsored by the Society for Sugarcane Research and Development (SSRD), Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu was to share the experiences of the sugarcane farmers and their new technologies.

The Progressive Farmers of different states namely Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat registered their participation in the workshop.
