The ICAR-National Research Centre on Meat, Hyderabad organized the “World Food Safety Day” today.
The theme of this year’s celebration was kept “Food Safety, Everyone’s Business” for commemorating the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ initiative.
The Chief Guest, Dr. S. Vaithiyanathan, Director, ICAR-NRCM highlighted the organization’s various initiatives to achieve the food safety in the country under the guidance of FSSAI, a like establishment of National Referral Laboratory for Meat and meat products, research projects funded by FSSAI on meat adulteration detection and detection of carcinogenic compounds in processed meat.
The occasion also held a Guest Lecture by the Guest of Honor, Dr. B. Dinesh Kumar, Scientist G, HoD, Drug Toxicology Division, ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) & President, Indian Pharmacological Society on the thematic area. Dr. Kumar highlighted the importance of networking of research organizations to share and strengthen the food safety data base in the country. He also stated the various factors like pesticide residues, drug residues, biological hazards and fast changing food habits that are one of the major compromised food safety concerns that affect the public health on a larger extent.
