Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra , Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) inaugurated the Brainstorming Workshop on Genomic Selection and its Implementation in India: The Way Forward at ICAR-IVRI, Izatnagar on 17th September, 2018. The workshop was jointly organized by ICAR-IVRI, Izatnagar and Indian Society of Animal Genetics and Breeding.
Dr R. K. Singh, Director & VC, ICAR-IVRI, Izatnagar in his inaugural address welcomed the delegates in the brainstorming workshop and emphasized upon the importance of genomic selection in present scenario of livestock production and growing need for taking up focused programs in the field. Dr B P Mishra, Joint Director (Research) and convener laid down the background, theme and scope of the workshop. He stressed upon the challenges of genomic selection and expressed confidence that brainstorming will provide way forward for execution of genomic selection programs for livestock improvement in the country. Dr T. J. Rasool, President, ISAGB briefed the delegates and invitees about the activities undertaken by the society in the form of national convention, symposia and workshops to update the knowledge and critically analyze the issues concerning animal production for the benefit of researchers and industry. He talked on scenario of the land and water scarcity in the country and expectations from animal scientists to work for improving livestock production within these constraints. Dr Joykrushna Jena, DDG (FS & Animal Science), ICAR emphasized upon utilizing advancements in genomics for increasing the productivity of cattle and buffalo in the country. He highlighted on focusing efforts towards conservation of indigenous breeds and developing elite breeding bulls for breed improvement programs. Dr K.M. Bujarbaruah, VC, AAU, Jorhat enlightened the house about the developments in the area of genomic selection across the world and in India.
