ICAR - Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad celebrated its 41st Foundation Day today.
Dr N. K. Krishna Kumar, Regional Director, Bioversity International-India, New Delhi delivered Foundation Day lecture on “Coconut, Palm and Olive Oil: International Scenario, Market and Way Forward”. Dr Kumar said with increase in population growth @5% by 2025 and changing consumption patterns, the demand for edible oil would go up to 33.69 million tonnes with per capita consumption of 25.6 kg/head. Research & Development of edible oil is to be viewed from commodity perspective. As the olive oil consumption is increasing in urban areas, efforts to cultivate this crop in suitable regions viz. foothills of Himalayas, Kodaikanal, parts of Western Ghats may be initiated. He said virgin coconut oil (VCO) can be marketed as substitute for olive oil in international market. Considering that the major vegetable oil consumed in India being palm oil (42%) and with the kind of high productivity per unit area, concerted efforts should be made to increase the area under cultivation of palm oil.
Guests of Honor, Dr.V.Praveen Rao, Vice-Chancellor, PJTSAU, Hyderabad and D.r V. Ranga Rao, Former Director, IIOR, appreciated the achievements of the Institute.
Earlier, Dr. A. Vishnuvardhan Reddy, Director, ICAR-IIOR, in his introductory remarks briefed about the achievements of the Institute during the year 2017-18.
Dr. E.A. Siddiq, Former DDG (CS), Directors of other ICAR institutes in Hyderabad, IIOR staff and PJTSAU senior officials were present on this occasion.
