The ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research (IIRR), Hyderabad organised Farmers’ Day today.
The Chief Guest, Dr. D. Raji Reddy, Former Director of Extension, Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad emphasized on the need for reducing the cultivation cost in rice to increase the farmers’ net income. He urged the farmers for using the fertilizers and pesticides judiciously. Dr. Reddy also accentuated on the importance of mechanization for coping up with the labor shortage during the critical operations in rice cultivation.
Dr. S.R. Voleti, Director, ICAR-IIRR highlighted about the development of several high yielding varieties with various traits, such as, drought tolerant, submergence tolerant, high temperature tolerant and BLB resistant varieties. Dr. Voleti also mentioned about the biofortified rice varieties, such as, DRR Dhan 45, 48 and 49.
The ICAR-IIRR rice variety Improved Samba Mahsuri seed packets at a nominal price along with the rice related literature were distributed to the farmers.
Around 7 innovative rice farmers were also felicitated during the occasion.
The Farmers’-Scientists’-Interaction Session enabled the farmers for updating their ideas on modern scientific methods in rice production to improve the rice productivity.
The main aim of the event was to display the rice varieties and technologies of ICAR-IIRR.
About 250 farmers from the adjoining Districts participated in the event.
