Three-day Agro-biodiversity exhibition, Regional Workshop on Farmers’ Rights and 12th DUS Review meeting ( January 15-17, 2018) began at ICAR- Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow today.
Dr. B. Rajender, Chairperson, Protection of Plant Varieties & Farmers’ Right Authority (PPVFRA) and Joint Secretary (Seed), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of India, in his inaugural address urged all the DUS (Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability) centres incharges to religiously follow the guidelines and laid down procedures in identification and registration of varieties of different crops.
Dr. R. C. Agrawal, Registrar General, PPVFRA, reminded the commitment of the authority towards DUS centres and he requested to all centre incharges to utilize released fund as per guidelines of Govt. of India and to submit utilization certificate to the authority in time.
Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, IISR highlighted the achievements of the institute. He also informed about the recent efforts of the institute towards doubling the farmers’ income through Public-Private-Partnership mode. In PPP mode IISR is introducing cane interventions like verities, seed production, planting methods, cane machines, bio agents, post harvest techniques in farmers’ fields with encouraging results.
In the inaugural session Dr. S. Rajan, Director, CISH, Lucknow; Dr. N.P. Singh, Director, IIPR, Kanpur; Dr. B. Singh, Director, IIVR, Varanasi; Drs. Ravi Prakash, T. K. Nagrathna, S.A. Desai from PPVFRA, New Delhi also participated as special guests.
In the event more 150 Scientists from 90 DUS centres situated in different states of the country, from 20-25 KVKs in UP & Uttarakhand and 300 farmers are participating.
Participating farmers showcased the agro-diversity conserved in their own farming conditions in terms of local varieties of vegetable crops, fruit crops, cucurbits, tuber crops, maize, rice etc. An exhibition on bio-diversity was also put up. The progress of each participating DUS centres in current financial year will be reviews and plan of work for next financial year will be they will chalk out. Officers of PPVFRA informed that DUS guidelines have been completed for 147 crop species and for 30-40 more crop species work for finalizing DUS guidelines are in progress. The authority has received about 15900 applications for registration, out of which about 1200 applications have been received from farmers. The workshop on farmers rights is aimed to make strategies for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttarkhand.
