Dr. Anand Kumar Singh, Deputy Director General (Horticultural Science), ICAR visited the ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh today.
During his visit, the DDG applauded the horticultural sector’s expansion in terms of production and productivity. He also emphasized that with the rise in production level, the challenges of storability and processing will also rise. During his interactions with the Institute’s Scientists, Dr. Singh urged for thinking like farmers and consumers while developing the varieties.
The importance of identifying the Districts involved in the vegetable production for “One District, One Product (ODOP)” along with the Government of India was accentuated by Dr. Singh. The DDG highlighted the cultivation of indigenous vegetables in the identified ODOP with the goal of bringing these into the mainstream. The use of Artificial Intelligence in the horticulture sector to strengthen the farming and improve the forecasting was underlined by Dr. Singh. He also stressed on using the Drone Technology for surveillance and data collection.
Earlier, welcoming the Chief Guest, Dr. T.K. Behera, Director, ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi briefed about the Institute’s achievements and ongoing research activities.
