The ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi organized its “58th Convocation” today.
In his Convocation address, the Chief Guest, Shri Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Vice President regarded the agriculture as the basic culture of India and the backbone of the Indian economy. He applauded the scientific, technological and industrial advancements made in the field of agriculture and allied services. He highlighted about the contributions of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute for bringing about the Green Revolution in the country. Shri Naidu stated that it is the result of the Institutions’ regular researches and advancements in the varieties that have led to enhance the production of food grains to about 283.37 Million Tonnes in 2018-19. The Hon’ble Vice President mentioned about the predomination by the Pusa Basmati Rice varieties over the rice cultivation in the country. The Wheat varieties HD 2967 and HD 3086 have played a vital role in enhancing the wheat production and productivity in the country. He urged for finding out the ways to make the country 100% hunger free.
Shri Naidu also stressed on achieving the nutrition security along with food security in the country. He emphasized to prioritize the home grown food security. He urged to address the ever increasing problems and challenges of hidden hunger among the adolescents as it affects the socio-economic growth of the country. The Hon’ble Vice President also highlighted about the various Central Government’s Schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (Scheme for Agro-Marine Processing and Development of Agro-Processing Clusters) that are aimed at enhancing the income and livelihood of the agricultural and farming communities.
Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare; Shri Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) along with Deputy Directors General and other senior officials of ICAR Institutes and State Agricultural Universities were also present during the occasion.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh, Director, ICAR-IARI briefed about the programme.
During the occasion, a total of 242 students including foreign students from 26 disciplines were felicitated with the Degrees along with 5 merit medals and 1 Best student award both for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
The dignitaries also released the various ICAR-IARI Publications and crops varieties during the occasion.
