The “8th International Conference on Agricultural Statistics - 2019 (ICAS-VIII)” will be organized at New Delhi from 18th to 21st November, 2019.
Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare will preside over and Bill Gates will inaugurate the conference on 18th November, 2019.
Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) addressed the press and media during the Curtain Raiser of the “8th International Conference on Agricultural Statistics - 2019 (ICAS-VIII)” held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi today.
Highlighting about the conference, Dr. Mohapatra stated that the ICAS-VIII will provide a great learning experience for the young scientists and entrepreneurs of the agricultural arena to interact with the leading scientists and experts of agricultural and allied fields. The Director General mentioned that the Shri Bill Gates will grace the inaugural ceremony of the Conference on 18th November, 2019.
Dr. Mohapatra accentuated on the importance of analyzing the data for succeeding the designated field of work. He regarded the data analysis and its prompt interpretation and presentation as one of the vital elements for the success of the agricultural community. Highlighting the importance of Sustainable Development Goals, the Director General mentioned that it will help in eradicating the problems and challenges of malnutrition in an effective manner. Dr. Mohapatra emphasized that the conference will be helpful in discussing and framing the new policies and future action plans.
The Director General also highlighted about the two-day “Training Session on Methodology for Agricultural Censuses and Surveys” on 22nd & 23rd November, 2019. He emphasized that the seminar is intended for young statisticians working in the field of agricultural statistics, or statisticians new to the field of agricultural statistics.
Dr. Purvi Mehta, Senior Advisor and Head of Agriculture for Asia, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) highlighted about the huge potential in agricultural statistics in India. She stated that the conference will be a great opportunity for the various scientists and experts of agricultural fields to exchange their expertise with each other. This would help to enhance the agricultural scenario both at the country and the international level too. Dr. Mehta also highlighted that the conference will help in evidence-based policy making. She accentuated that the conference will help in Government of India’s vision of doubling the farmers’ income effectively and efficiently.
Mr. Michael Steiner, ISI CAS and World Bank expressed his gratitude for the organization of such important conference in the agriculturally rich country like India. He accentuated that the conference will witness the exchange of expertise between the leading agricultural stalwarts and the young entrepreneurs and scientists. He stressed on the vital role played by the prompt agricultural statistics in the development of the country.
The conference will be organized by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India with the active participation from the Department of Agriculture Cooperation & Farmers Welfare under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations; the US Department of Agriculture (USDA); ISI-CAS; EUROSTAT; Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and various other National and International organizations.
The theme of this Year’s ICAS-VIII would be “Statistics for Transformation of Agriculture to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. The Conference would also be annexed with multiple side events and trainings as the pre and post-conference events on the use of methods and standards for the collection and analysis of agricultural statistics.
With an aim to address the various challenges faced by the National Statistical Systems in producing the data to report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the various outcomes of various leading research and best practices in the field of agricultural statistics will be discussed and finalized during the Conference.
The Conference intends to bring together the agricultural statisticians from all over the world, representatives of National Statistical Offices and other related Ministries and Departments.
The ICAS-VIII has provided India with an opportunity for showing itself as an incredible country with outstanding statisticians. The occasion will also help the young statisticians from India in presenting their work and create better employment opportunities in the future.
A total of 1,200 participants consisting of Conference Delegates, Officials from various Ministries, Volunteers and Students will participate in the Inaugural Ceremony of the Conference to be held at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi on 18th November, 2019. As per the programme schedule, the Thematic Sessions will be held at The Ashok Hotel, New Delhi from 19th to 21st November, 2019.
This is a unique and important opportunity for India for hosting the academically enduring Conference for the first time. The occasion is also an opportunity for restating the rich scientific traditions of India in the field of statistics and agriculture by sharing the Indian expertise with the other countries. The venture would also help in promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage and international goodwill.
Shri Pietro Gennari, Chief Statistician, FAO, Rome, Italy; Ms. Mariana Kotzeva, Director General, EUROSTAT and Prof. Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog, India will be the Keynote Speakers during the Conference.
The Conference will provide an opportunity to the young statisticians, agricultural workers and policy planners to learn the use of modern approaches in agriculture, such as, big data analysis, wide use of Artificial Intelligence in agriculture, precision farming and remote sensing, etc., for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Around 600+ Delegates including about 200 Delegates from the various International Organizations, such as, FAO, USDA, EUROSTAT, ADB, AfDB, World Bank and from 60+ countries across the globe are expected to participate in the conference.
